Hyundai i20 MK1 MK2 MK3 LED Interior Map Reading Light Upgrade: First Mod Every Owner Should Do

What Is a i20 MK1 MK2 MK3 Interior LED Light Kit?

A i20 MK1 MK2 MK3 interior LED light kit is a set of direct-replacement bulbs that swap into the factory dome, map, reading, vanity, trunk, glove-box and footwell sockets without cutting or rewiring. (chassis codes I10, I20, HB20, I30) AutoKitShop lists 47 i20 MK1 MK2 MK3 LED kits covering model years 2000 to 2021. Kits for this model run from 2-piece to 11-piece sets. Each bulb is rated at 300 lumens and roughly 3x the brightness of the original incandescent lamp, at a fraction of the current draw, with a 50,000-hour service life. Kits are supplied as complete sets with the correct socket adapters, so nothing needs to be ordered separately. If a bulb does not light on first fit, rotate it 180 degrees, because LEDs are polarity sensitive. Colour options are white (6000K), ice blue, warm white (3000K) and purple.

What Is Included in the i20 MK1 MK2 MK3 LED Kit?

The Hyundai i20 doesn't get a lot of love in car enthusiast circles. It's not a hot hatch (well, the i20 N is, but that's a different beast). It's the sensible supermini — cheap to run, surprisingly well-built, and about as exciting as a beige filing cabinet. But spend enough time on Hyundai-i20.co.uk or the various i20 Facebook owners' groups, and you'll notice a pattern: people genuinely like these cars. And one of the most common "first mods" people do? Swapping out the terrible factory interior bulbs for LEDs.

This CANbus LED interior reading and map light kit covers the i20 across all three generations: MK1 (2008–2014), MK2 (2015–2020), and MK3 (2021–2025). Each generation gets the correct number of bulbs for its specific interior lighting layout.

What's In The Box — Generation by Generation

  • MK1 (2008–2014): 9 bulbs. This generation Hyundai kept it simple — front dome, front map lights, rear dome (5-door), door courtesy lights, glove box, and trunk. The 3-door MK1 doesn't have a rear dome, so that bulb becomes a spare.
  • MK2 (2015–2020): 11 bulbs. Hyundai added more lighting with the second-gen — vanity mirror lights appeared on Premium and Premium SE trims, and the boot got a dedicated LED position rather than sharing the dome circuit.
  • MK3 (2021–2025): 11 bulbs. The current i20 kept the same lighting count but moved to a different bulb type for the overhead console — T10 wedges across the board, which is actually easier to work with.

CANbus on a Hyundai? Yes — It Matters

Hyundai's been using CANbus monitoring on their body control modules since around 2010. The MK2 and MK3 i20s will absolutely flag a bulb-out if a non-resisted LED is installed on the dome light circuit. It's not a catastrophic error — just an annoying yellow triangle on the dash that won't go away until you either code it out or install proper CANbus LEDs. These Zitwo bulbs solve it at the hardware level.

Install Tips — No Trim Damage Required

The i20's interior is well-put-together for a budget hatch, which means the trim clips are actually decent. That said, always use a plastic trim tool, not a screwdriver — the headliner material marks easily.

Front dome (all generations): Pry from the front edge of the clear lens. The housing stays in the headliner — you're just popping the lens off. The bulbs are standard T10 wedges that pull straight out. Rear dome on 5-door models: Same approach — pry the lens from the side with the small notch. Door lights: These are the trickiest because the housing on MK2/MK3 models is integrated into the door card's lower edge. Use a thin trim tool along the bottom edge and the whole unit pops out with the wiring harness attached. Disconnect the plug before trying to swap the bulb — the harness is short and you'll fight it otherwise.

Glove box: The switch-activated bulb is on the top-left wall inside the glove box. On MK3 models, it's behind a small plastic shield that twists off. If your glove box light doesn't come on, check that the plunger switch isn't stuck — common issue on i20s that have seen years of service manuals crammed in there.

Color Options

Four choices: white (6000K — clean and modern, matches the i20's gauge cluster backlighting), ice blue (8000K), warm white (3000K), and purple. White is the overwhelming forum favorite — it makes the i20's gray-on-gray interior feel less like a sensory deprivation tank at night.
