What Is a Picanto Interior LED Light Kit?
A Picanto interior LED light kit is a set of direct-replacement bulbs that swap into the factory dome, map, reading, vanity, trunk, glove-box and footwell sockets without cutting or rewiring. AutoKitShop lists 28 Picanto LED kits covering model years 1999 to 2021. Kits for this model run from 2-piece to 8-piece sets. Each bulb is rated at 300 lumens and roughly 3x the brightness of the original incandescent lamp, at a fraction of the current draw, with a 50,000-hour service life. Kits are supplied as complete sets with the correct socket adapters, so nothing needs to be ordered separately. If a bulb does not light on first fit, rotate it 180 degrees, because LEDs are polarity sensitive. Colour options are white (6000K), ice blue, warm white (3000K) and purple.
What Should You Know About The Picanto Paradox: Great Little Car,?
The Kia Picanto — sold as the Kia Morning in South Korea — is the definition of a city car done right. Three generations, millions sold globally, and one of the few genuinely affordable cars that doesn't feel like a penalty box to drive. Owners on the Kia Picanto Owners Club forums are fiercely loyal to these things, and for good reason: cheap to run, easy to park, and surprisingly well-built for the price point.
But the interior lighting on every generation has been an afterthought. The MK1 (2004-2011) has a single dome light that's barely adequate. The MK2 (2012-2016) improved the interior but kept the same sad bulbs. Even the current MK3 (2017-2025) with its modern-looking cabin uses the same basic incandescent spec for interior illumination.
AutoKitShop's Picanto kit spans all three generations with different bulb counts and types for each. The MK1 gets a 6-piece kit, while the MK2 and MK3 get 8-piece configurations that account for the additional light positions Kia added in later models.
What Is Included in the Picanto LED Kit?
- MK1 (2004-2011) — 6 pieces: Dome light, map lights, trunk light, license plate lights
- MK2 (2012-2016) — 8 pieces: Same as MK1 plus additional rear passenger reading lights
- MK3 (2017-2025) — 8 pieces: Dome, map, cargo, license plate, and footwell positions
Each kit is generation-specific. The MK1's dome light uses a different festoon length than the MK2/MK3, and the license plate bulb sockets changed between generations. AutoKitShop ships the exact bulbs your car needs — no universal kit guesswork.
Why Even Bother on a Budget Car?
This is actually the question I see most on the Picanto forums: "it's just a cheap city car, why spend money on LED interior lights?" Here's why: because you spend time in this car. Probably more time than you think. City driving means frequent stops, loading and unloading in parking garages, finding things in the back seat at night, dropping your phone between the seat and the center console. The factory bulbs are so dim that you literally cannot read text in the back seat of a Picanto at night. With the LED kit, you can.
At $14-16 for the full kit, we're talking about the price of two coffees and a sandwich. For that you get a cabin that's actually usable after dark.

How Do You Install LED Interior Lights in a Picanto?
The Picanto's compact dimensions mean the interior trim is tightly packaged. Here's the approach:
MK1 (2004-2011): The dome light lens on early Picantos is infamous for being brittle. Warm it up with a few minutes of cabin heat before prying — cold plastic shatters. The bulb is a ~28mm festoon. Map lights (if equipped) are individual wedge bulbs accessed from behind the overhead console.
MK2 (2012-2016): Kia improved the trim quality for the second generation. The dome light housing drops as a unit — pry from the front windshield edge. T10 wedge bulbs for the map lights, festoon for the dome.
MK3 (2017-2025): The current Picanto has the nicest interior but the tightest clearances. The dome light assembly is integrated into the headliner — use a trim tool on the passenger side clip first. Everything else is standard T10 wedge and festoon swaps.
License plate lights (all generations): Access from outside. Two screws per housing under the rear hatch or trunk lip. On the MK3, they're integrated into the tailgate handle trim — look for the small rectangular lenses.
Will LED Bulbs Trigger a Warning Light on a Picanto?
Kia didn't put the Picanto's interior lights on any CANbus monitoring circuit, regardless of generation. Even the latest MK3 with its modern infotainment and driver assists runs the cabin lighting on basic switched circuits. No error codes, no hyper-flash, no ghost glow.
That said, the AutoKitShop bulbs are still built with regulated drivers. When you're sitting at a stoplight with the auto start-stop cycling the engine on and off, the voltage dips can cause unregulated LEDs to flicker. The onboard regulation in these bulbs smooths that out.
Which Colour Temperature Should You Choose?
- White (6000K): Makes the Picanto's interior feel more premium. Best match for MK3 models with LED DRLs.
- Ice Blue: Subtle and modern. Pairs well with aftermarket head units.
- Warm White (3000K): For owners who want brighter light but don't want it to look like a modification.
- Purple: The wild card. The Picanto's young buyer demographic tends to enjoy personalization — purple interior lighting is a cheap way to make the car feel customized.
What About Shipping and Warranty?
AutoKitShop stands behind these with their standard warranty. At this price point, some buyers wonder if they're getting quality or just expensive AliExpress bulbs — these are quality. The SMD chips are name-brand, the soldering is clean, and the color temperature is consistent from bulb to bulb. If something's wrong, they'll send a replacement.
For the price of lunch, you're fixing the single worst thing about every Kia Picanto's interior. It's not a flashy mod, but it's one you'll appreciate every single night.
