What Is a Saab Interior LED Light Kit?
A Saab interior LED light kit is a set of direct-replacement bulbs that swap into the factory dome, map, reading, vanity, trunk, glove-box and footwell sockets without cutting or rewiring. AutoKitShop lists 0 Saab LED kits covering model years the model run. Each bulb is rated at 300 lumens and roughly 3x the brightness of the original incandescent lamp, at a fraction of the current draw, with a 50,000-hour service life. Kits are supplied as complete sets with the correct socket adapters, so nothing needs to be ordered separately. If a bulb does not light on first fit, rotate it 180 degrees, because LEDs are polarity sensitive. Colour options are white (6000K), ice blue, warm white (3000K) and purple.
What Should You Know About Keeping the Saab Spirit Alive With?
Saab died in 2012, but the cars are still on the road. And if you own a 9-3, 9-5, or one of the rarer XWD models, you know the struggle of finding quality parts. The interior bulbs are one of those things that Saab sourced from the lowest bidder dim incandescent units that look outdated even by 2005 standards. And with Saab gone, the aftermarket support isn't what it used to be.
On SaabCentral and SaabNet, the LED interior swap is one of the most popular how-to threads. The catch is finding a kit that covers all the weird Saab-specific bulb sizes. This AutoKitShop kit covers the 9-3 (98-15), 9-5 (98-12), plus the niche models 9-2X (05-06), 9-3X (09-12), 9-4X (11-12), and 9-7X (05-12). Even covers cabriolet variants.
What Is Included in the Saab LED Kit?
- 9-3 Sedan (98-02): 12 pieces
- 9-3 Sedan (03-15): 13 pieces
- 9-3 Wagon (03-15): 13 pieces
- 9-3 Cabrio (98-03): 8 pieces
- 9-3 Cabrio (04-15): 8 pieces
- 9-5 (98-09): 14 pieces
- 9-5 (10-12): 14 pieces
- 9-2X (05-06): 9 pieces
- 9-3X (09-12): 14 pieces
- 9-4X (11-12): 14 pieces
- 9-7X (05-12): 13 pieces
All use 5050 SMD LEDs with CANbus resistors. 300% brightness increase. Direct fit.
What Should You Know About Why This Matters for Saab Owners?
Saab interiors are quirky. The Night Panel mode, the ignition between the seats, the cockpit-wrapped dashboard all of it gets washed out by bad factory lighting. The 9-5 dashboard at night with the green instrument cluster is one of the best-looking cabins of its era, but the overhead lights ruin the mood when they cast that dim yellow glow.
The 9-3 cabriolet is where this mod makes the biggest difference. With the top down at night, factory bulbs are practically invisible. The LED kit punches through ambient light and makes the cabin usable. SaabCentral members who've done this mod report it as 'how the car should have come from the factory.'
For the 9-5 wagon and 9-3 wagon owners the cargo area lighting is transformed. Saab wagons have lights in the side panels, but they're weak. LEDs make finding gear in the back at night effortless.
Will LED Bulbs Trigger a Warning Light on a Saab?
After GM took over, Saab adopted CANbus lighting. The 9-3 03-15, 9-5 98-09, and all NG9-5 (10-12) models use CANbus monitoring. The 9-2X is basically a Subaru Impreza underneath and doesn't use CANbus for interior lights. The 9-7X is a Chevy Trailblazer underneath no interior CANbus monitoring either.
For the CANbus-equipped models, this kit's built-in resistors prevent the 'bulb failure' light on the SID (Saab Information Display) and prevent ghosting. The 9-3 has a known issue where resistor-free LEDs cause the interior lights to stay dimly lit for up to 30 seconds after closing the doors. The CANbus resistors fix this.
Which Colour Temperature Should You Choose?
- White (6000K): The forum recommendation. Clean, modern Saab cabin feel.
- Ice Blue (8000K): Cool blue. Matches the blue Saab dash lighting on the 9-3 NG.
- Purple: Unconventional for Saab. A few Euro owners run it.
- Warm White: Closest to the factory Saab cabin warmth but brighter.

How Do You Install LED Interior Lights in a Saab?
- 9-3 NG (03-15) the dome light assembly clips into the headliner at four points. Push the assembly toward the windshield, then pull down the rear edge.
- 9-5 OG (98-09) the map lights in the overhead console use twist-lock sockets. Turn 90 degrees counterclockwise.
- 9-3 Cabrio the rear dome light is on the roll bar between the rear seats. The lens has two small tabs that need to be depressed simultaneously.
- 9-7X uses GM-style sockets throughout. Wedge bulbs pull straight out.
- 9-2X Subaru-based. The dome light lens pries off from the front edge. Be gentle the plastic is known to crack in cold weather.
