What Is a Taos Interior LED Light Kit?

A Taos interior LED light kit is a set of direct-replacement bulbs that swap into the factory dome, map, reading, vanity, trunk, glove-box and footwell sockets without cutting or rewiring. AutoKitShop lists 1 Taos LED kits covering model years the model run. Kits for this model run from 10-piece to 10-piece sets. Each bulb is rated at 300 lumens and roughly 3x the brightness of the original incandescent lamp, at a fraction of the current draw, with a 50,000-hour service life. Kits are supplied as complete sets with the correct socket adapters, so nothing needs to be ordered separately. If a bulb does not light on first fit, rotate it 180 degrees, because LEDs are polarity sensitive. Colour options are white (6000K), ice blue, warm white (3000K) and purple.

What Should You Know About The New Taos Great CUV, Dim?

Volkswagen's Taos hit the US market in 2020 as a subcompact crossover targeting the CX-30 and RAV4. It's a good car decent space, typical VW interior quality, good fuel economy. But like almost every VW in the last decade, the interior lighting is an afterthought. The dome light, map lights, trunk light all the same yellow incandescent bulbs VW has been using since the Mk3 Golf.

Over on VW Vortex, the Taos section is relatively new but the interior lighting complaint is universal. Owners want plug-and-play LEDs without dealing with VW's CANbus system throwing errors. This AutoKitShop kit is the answer.

What Is Included in the Taos LED Kit?

The kit includes 10 bulbs that cover every interior position in the 2020-2023 VW Taos:

  • Front dome/map light assembly 2 bulbs
  • Rear dome light 1 bulb
  • Trunk/cargo light 1 bulb
  • Vanity mirror lights (driver + passenger) 2 bulbs
  • Glove box light 1 bulb
  • Door courtesy lights 2 bulbs
  • Footwell lights 1-2 bulbs depending on trim

All are 5050 SMD LEDs with pre-soldered CANbus resistors. Direct fitment into existing VW sockets. 300% brighter than the factory units.

How Do LEDs Compare With the Stock Bulbs in a Taos?

The Taos has a surprisingly spacious cabin for its footprint. But the single rear dome light struggles to illuminate the back seat area. Kids in the back can't see to read or find dropped items. With LEDs, the rear seat gets usable light that actually reaches down to the floor area.

The cargo area is another big win. The Taos has decent trunk space (27.9 cubic feet), but the factory light in the left panel illuminates about 10% of that space. The LED kit makes the whole cargo area visible grocery bags, sports gear, whatever you're hauling.

The footwell lights are the hidden gem. VW only puts them on higher trims, and even then they're dim. The LED kit makes them bright enough to actually see what's in the footwell.

Will LED Bulbs Trigger a Warning Light on a Taos?

VW has been using CANbus-based lighting control since the mid-2000s. The Taos runs on the MQB platform, which monitors interior bulb resistance extensively. Put in uncapped LEDs and you'll experience interior lights that flicker when you open the door, lights that stay dimly lit after closing, or intermittent 'light failure' warnings.

VW's BCM (Body Control Module) uses PWM (pulse-width modulation) for the interior dimming feature. This PWM signal confuses many cheap LEDs. The CANbus resistors in this kit stabilize the signal, allowing smooth dimming without flicker. On VW Vortex Taos section, members report zero issues with CANbus-equipped LEDs that include the right resistor values exactly what this kit provides.

Which Colour Temperature Should You Choose?

  • White (6000K): The right choice for a Taos. Matches the VW infotainment screen and ambient lighting.
  • Ice Blue (8000K): Cool blue. Some VW owners love the contrast with the gray/black interiors.
  • Purple: Not common for Taos owners but available.
  • Warm White (3000K): OEM+ look. Matches the warm ambient lighting on SEL trims.

How Do You Install LED Interior Lights in a Taos?

  1. Front dome/map light assembly the entire unit has two metal spring clips at the front edge. Press a flat trim tool into the gap at the front of the assembly (windshield side) and pry downward gently.
  2. Rear dome light pry from the rear edge. The lens and housing come as one piece. The bulb is a 36mm festoon.
  3. Trunk light on the driver's side panel. Pry from the bottom with a trim tool. Once out, pull the 31mm festoon and replace.
  4. Vanity mirror lights the lens slides sideways, then drops. Some Taos trims have this as a covered mirror with an LED.
  5. Footwell lights if equipped, they're above the dead pedal on the driver's side and above the glove box on the passenger side. The lens twists off.
